Nothing has impacted Caroline's life more than her relationship with Canine Companions for Independence. She received her first "skilled companion" CCI service dog, Sajen, when she was in 5th grade. He gave her love, independence and courage for 12 years, marching in many Christmas parades and the Inaugural Parade in 2013. They competed in 4H events (agility, obedience and rally), including many trips to the Virginia State Fair. Most importantly, they grew up together, as he was there every day and every night to be her friend.
In the fall of 2013, Caroline graduated from Canine Companions with Shelly III. Shelly is a very different dog than Sajen was, a very soft and gentle being, who works perfectly with Caroline's quiet voice. Shelly was by Caroline's side as she graduated from college, and now helps her be more independent in her young adult life.
Canine Companions for Independence breeds, raises, trains and places these amazing dogs at no cost to the recipient, thanks to donors and volunteer puppy raisers.
